Winches from HATLAPA in Uetersen, Germany are found on all conceivable types of ships sailing the seas. Importance has always been laid on the development of the drives. The parading role with frequency inverter controlled A.C. motors during the last years should be specially mentioned. More than 500 winches with this motor type have been delivered. This development of HATLAPA was patent-protected at an early stage and is distinguished by the creation of nominal pull even at zero speed. This is a decisive advan-tage for mooring winches in their holding function and is also applicable as ex-proof de-sign for all kinds of tankers and gas carriers.
HATLAPA anchor and mooring winches are of modular compact design, available with different types of foundations so that the preferences of the various shipyards can be considered. It is observed basically that the alignment and installation on deck can be ef-fected with the lowest expenditure by the shipyard.
Towing winches, research winches, and winches for other special purposes, which are developed and built in exact accordance with customer requirements, have formed a firm part of the HATLAPA product offer. Depending on the demands and customer require-ments either low-pressure hydraulic, high-pressure hydraulic or electrical drives are installed.
After the concentration process in the Norwegian and English supply industry, HATLAPA has become one of two manufacturers of large, hydraulic high-torque motors in the low-pressure range with system pressures of 65 bar. These drives cannot be surpassed at present with regard to sturdiness and reliability. They are preferably used for anchor, mooring and working winches with high capacity requirements.
Starting off in April 2006 the managing partners of HATLAPA decided to take over the core assets of the business field “ship technology and cargo handling” of KGW, creating a new company with a maritime focus: KGW MARINE GMBH
It emerged from the former business field and widens the HATLAPA Group’s customer basis significantly. Cruise lines, international navies and many customers in the GUS have been among KGW’s preferred clientele.
At the same time the technological basis was extended. Since KGW products are engi-neered and produced under the high-quality headline “made in Germany” over the last 60 years, know-how, expertise and innovation are linked with experience and tradition.
All these aspects give a unique opportunity to broaden customer contacts and techno-logical capabilities, while ensuring and combining the acquired know-how and experi-ence allow the highest possible customer benefit.
Yet another step into mutual partnership is the international “joined forces” with OIL STATES SKAGIT SMATCO. OIL STATES is an internationally very well known US off-shore service company. HATLAPA and OIL STATES joined their capacities for the pro-duction of large towing winches with no less than 2000 kN. In doing so, HATLAPA goes “back to the roots” tying up to their own offshore history back in the early ‘80s.
Starting with the North Sea oil discoveries and as these wells were developed to go on stream, many offshore supply and support vessels where designed and built in Germany for which HATLAPA built the towing and anchor handling winches. This know-how –especially with regard to the high power low pressure HATLAPA hydraulic motor– has been taken into consideration as OIL STATES was looking for a partner in producing off-shore winches.
Both companies in combination represent more than 140 years of know-how and exper-tise here and abroad, in the North Sea and the Gulf. The unique combination of SMATCO strength and HATLAPA power is a very strong alliance in terms of innovation, capacity, experience and expertise tying two strong partners to be even more than just adding the individual parts.
The compressor range of HATLAPA is famous for its 2-stage-watercooled and 3-stage-aircooled compressors, with the enlarged portfolio by V-Line starting air compressors and screw type working air compressors.
The whole production including purchasing and logistics is located in Germany and forms considerable investments in modern processing machines and in the efficient, and largely automated order process control, which the company has undertaken during the last years since its concentration on the world-wide shipping supply industry.
The steering gear programme has been enlarged further to meet all requirements even for the newest container ships with capacities of more than 10.000 TEU with rudder torques up to 10.200 kNm.
After several European company buy-outs, HATLAPA is the only non-Asian manufacturer of large ram-type steering gear, competitors being Japanese makers, mainly operating as licensors in Korea and China. HATLAPA was able to steadily increase its market share during the last years and offers by far the most modern technique where drives and controls are concerned.
In addition, HATLAPA developed also the range of small compact steering gear further, starting at rudder torques of 30 kNm work boats and other smaller units are supplied with
Further the proven cooperation with Becker Marine Systems represents a valuable sup-plement to many fields of activities. The companies are aiming at extending their knowl-edge through an intensive exchange of experience, and optimising the fulfilment of cus-tomer requirements by providing common product developments on rudder systems.
HATLAPA is at the disposal of ship operators at all times with their world-wide network of service stations, and quick delivery of service engineers and spare parts.
Further more HATLAPA offers a complete compressors management for the entire shi-powner´s fleet.
Special modification design for winches enable older tankers to fulfil all OCIMF-requirements.
At their location in Uetersen, with a staff of 250, HATLAPA has an annual turnover of approx. 60 million EUR. Thirty apprentices are trained in 9 different professions.
