In July 2004 the RS "Solea" was delivered, which was built at the shipyard Fassmer Werft GmbH & Co. KG. With the commissioning of the "Solea" one of the present three quietest fishery research vessels in the world is now in operation, replacing the old "Solea" which has been operative for 30 years.
Laboratory equipment and above all special deck equipment is necessary to cope with the numerous task of the ship in fishery research.
Due to our long years' experience with deck machinery for research vessels (Polarstern, Heinke, Alkor, Meteor, Walter Herwig III etc.) we again delivered winch equipment to the full satisfaction of our customer (Bundesamt für Wasserbau).
One anchor and mooring winch for 22 mm K3 anchor chain and one vertical capstan with a pull of 25 kN have been installed for the regular ship's operation on board the "Solea". The windlass has a pull of max. 42 kN with a holding load of 180 kN.
Two trawl winches, two net winders, two topping winches and two auxiliary winches were supplied for the fishing equipment.
The trawl winches are HATLAPA special winches. These can be operated from the bridge and the control stands. They are equipped with a length, speed, and force measuring device. The monitored data is evaluated by the ship's central computer.
Thanks to the quick-release function the load can be lowered in case of emergency. The hydraulically driven winches have a pull of 80 kN and a holding load of 150 kN. The special feature of the winches are the spooling devices driven directly by the drums, guaranteeing the lowest grade of wear on the trawl lines of up to 1000 m length.
The split drums of the hydraulically driven net winches are designed for approx. 150 m steel wire rope and a net capacity of 3 cbm. They reach a nominal pull of 40 kN at a speed of 0-30 m/min.
The hydraulically driven winches used for topping up and down the trawl beam jib have a max. pull of 40 kN.
The single core cable winch covers two important areas in fishery research. A measuring probe is let to water by the 800 m long single core cable which serves data logging, and is also used for bongo fishing. To this purpose a plankton net is towed by the single core cable winch. The winch reaches a speed of 0-100 m/min in the 1st layer with a pull of 8 kN. The winch is equipped with a diamond screw for protecting the cable as far as possible.
The fishery winches are operated by a hydraulic pump set, mainly consisting of two pumps with variable displacement, driven by slow speed motors of 100 kW (extremely quiet), as well as control hydraulics for clutch and brakes, and all necessary components for safe operation of the winches.
